Etseri Day Center

Etseri, located in the Imereti (western) region, was the very first institution where Peachtree Road United Methodist Church began its humanitarian efforts in 1999 and they have continued since then without interruption.

In 2008, as part of the government’s re-integration plan, Etseri closed as an orphanage and re-opened as a day care facility under the wonderful direction of Gocha Nutsubidze.  Etseri currently serves as a safe haven for 70 children who are from the very poorest families. It is open 365 days/year from 2 pm to about 8 pm and the children receive two nutritious meals and enjoy after school activities which include such things as drama, sewing, national music and dance, English, computer classes, and woodworking. In the summer months it is a place where the children can safely play, away from the risk of crime and drugs on the street.

The devoted staff surrounds the children with love, nurturing them and encouraging them to learn and develop vocational skills which will enable them to care for themselves when they graduate. Thanks to the Sponsor-a-child program these children receive the needed medical attention, medicines, balanced meals, dental care and clothing. Private donors fund such things as the English teacher and buy supplies for the dressmaking, embroidery and woodworking classes.

Due to donor grants, some children and now attending hairstyling workshops, accounting classes, and nursing school!

 ETSERI CHILD PROFILE

Meet Larisa and Mtvarisa, sisters - 12 & 13.  There are 13 family members living together in a small rented house, their 35 year old mother is currently imprisoned, their father is living in Tbilisi and no one has a job. They were prevented from going to school but now are learning English, sewing, drama, and dress making at Etseri, which is their safe haven.  They are so happy now and enjoy playing with their peers ~ something they have never been allowed to do.
